Raising Flags Rubric

Outline of activity:  You have 30 minutes for the entire activity including discussion.  Students work in groups for 15 minutes.  Quick presentations followed by discussion.  The facilitator's performance is the key to the success of this activity.  Be prepared for explosive comments from students during and after the activity.

Criteria   Novice (C)    Apprentice (B)   Master (A)  Score
Engagement,
Participation

Lack of involvement, minimum effort, shows no interest. Shows interest but does not take the lead.  Positive attitude and good supportive action.  Natural leader within the group, listens to everyone's ideas and finds common ground, fulfills all requirements.
Understanding
of the process

Never clear on what is expected and doesn't try to find out. Follows basic guidelines provided but does not ask questions to further the project. Asks questions but if no answers are given, takes the lead anyway and finds a new approach to solving the problem.
Intellectual
Contribution

Follows directions but does not offer any ideas Offers some ideas but does not connect the ideas to symbols or cultural issues. Complains about the problem instead of solving the problem.  Offers valuable insight and helps group come to a decision.  Demonstrates inventiveness and ingenuity.
Creativity
Originality

Copies off of someone else, does what is standard and expected, or does nothing at all and begs freedom of choice.  Borrows from the already established idea of the flag and makes a perfect American flag as their own flag.  That form is already taken, although beautiful, still copying.  Tries a new idea and keeps revising until it works for the presentation.  Uses 'old' ideas and incorporates them into the project.  Makes connections and shows cultural sociological  relationships.
Professionalism
of Presentation

Messy and unorganized, incomplete. Organized but lacks one minor element/assignment. Organized, clear, good show.  Presentation is powerful, it educates entertains and communicates.

Please refer to your Bellevue University Active Learning Rubric Handout from the November 10th presentation.  Compare this rubric with Cy Leise's rubric and draw connections between them.  Combining rubrics is a valuable way to measure the effectiveness of an activity, and the progress of the learner and facilitator.
