Lesson Plan: “Let’s Write a Song” Source: Gary Stewart, URG Graduate Program Facilitator: Gary Stewart Workshop/Course: Focus on Standards Grade Level: (7th grade) 12 years old and up Time Required: 1 hour Subject and Topic: Music, Composition Multiple Intelligence: Musical, Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Mathematical, and Verbal Linguistic Entry Points: Hands-on, Social, Aesthetic Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, students will be able to understand and appreciate the importance of a composer. Students will gain knowledge of the basic elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and tone color) and learn how to notate their ideas on paper. This activity can be adapted to fit content specific objectives for the language arts class (poetry, creative writing) as students create lyrics to their song. Students will also be exposed to the advantages of cooperative learning in the classroom. Materials: Piano and/or Guitar, various percussion instruments, pencil/paper, and manuscript paper. Also, use of a blackboard and markers to reproduce the final project. Standards: Creative Expression and Communication (students sing, play instruments, improvise, compose, read and notate music) Benchmark A: Perform a piece of music independently or in a group with technical accuracy and expression.. Grades 5-8 1. Sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music representing diverse genres and cultures showing expression and technical accuracy at a level that includes modest ranges and changes of tempo, key, and meter. 2. Perform accurately, alone and in small and large groups, with good posture producing an appropriate tone quality. 3. Respond appropriately to the cues of a conductor. Benchmark B: Improvise or compose a short melody that includes key signature and meter signature with proper notation in treble or bass clef. Grade 5-8 4. Create music compositions using one or more parts in duple, triple and mixed meters. 5. Improvise melodies using major scales. 6. Read, write and perform rhythmic (including dotted rhythms) and melodic patterns in a variety of meters. 7. Identify whole steps, half steps and intervals in major scales. Benchmark C: Identify and recognize in a piece of music the following: clef, key signature, meter signature, tempo, dynamic markings and note values. Grade 5-8 8. Identify and use key signatures. 9. Identify and/or notate the following concert major scales: (i.e. Band: A, D, G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab. Strings: A, D, G, C, F.) 10. Read and notate melodies in the bass clef. |
