Living History Activity Source: This activity is connected to the Living History project currently underway with LCL and Chillicothe. Contact: Minda Hager. Objectives: My goal is for the participants of this workshop activity to be able to leave with the knowledge and methodology to repeat this activity in their own classrooms. A secondary objective is to expose teachers to opportunities from LCL coming in the spring. Materials: Access to historical documents of choice, room or space large enough to perform in small groups (classroom space is fine but a stage is best).
Notes for Facilitator: (Implementation) This activity can be repeated indefinitely. Everything depends on the Historical Documents being used according to the Unit covered in class. One challenge is knowing where to find Historical Documents. The next challenge is pulling out the salient issues from the larger document. Divide learners into groups. Handout excerpts to groups. Groups have 15 minutes to create a three-five minute skit from the document excerpt using words and movement as their tools (props are also encouraged). Performances begin 15 minutes later. Assess students on participation, extraction of important issues in the excerpt, delivery and presentation (entertaining and educational), collaboration. I haven't tried this activity yet, so take notes after you experience it in the workshop.
