TEACHING TO THE STANDARDS
IN ELEMENTARY SOCIAL STUDIES
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This workshop has been designed specifically for Chillicothe Elementary Social Studies
teachers with the intent to offer in-depth coverage of the ODE Academic Content
Standards for Social Studies. This workshop will provide examples of hands-on
learning activities that reach standards that can be directly applied to the classroom, research projects that
develop one's knowledge of the standards, and a space for collaboration.
SCHEDULE
Classroom based meetings include sessions to be held on November 10, January 12,
February 13, and May 7, 2004. These sessions will run from 1:30-4pm. The online portion lasts from January 2004 May 2004.
Participants should post a minimum of 12
messages in the online Discussion by May 2004.

requirements for fulfilling the Elementary Social Studies online workshop credit
facilitated by Amy Landrum are:
OBJECTIVES
These are the objectives from the Chillicothe City Schools Staff Development
Program for 2003-2004. Upon completion of this workshop students should be
able to:
To understand and implement the Academic Content
Standards and use indicators and benchmarks to plan instruction for the year.
To use data (EVALUATIONS) to gain knowledge about student gaps
in their learning and use the information to plan lessons on a weekly, monthly,
and quarterly basis.
To understand differential learning concepts and
how to meet all student needs in a classroom (SUBSTITUTING VISUAL INTERPRETATION
FOR VERBAL, COLLABORATIVE WORK).
To identify pacing practices to ensure all
indicators are taught for the year.
To organize instruction for collaborative
problem solving and performance measurements.
To explore best practices in content area to
increase student performance.
To use collaborative learning strategies to
increase student understanding of relevant concepts.
To discuss increasing the writing ability of
students in the content area (extended responses on assessments, proficiency,
and achievement).
To review benchmarks for the indicators to
prepare for state assessments (third, fourth, sixth, ninth, and tenth grades).
To utilize technology (ONLINE WORKSHOP) to improve teaching and
learning in the content area.
To gain strategies to involve parents in the
program.
Identify research based programs to improve
student performance in the content area.
HONOR POLICY
Plagiarism (the presentation of someone elses work as your own) and academic
dishonesty, i.e. cheating (deception in fulfilling academic requirements) will
not be tolerated. If a student presents someone else's work as his/her own and
fails to give credit to his/her sources, the student will automatically fail the
class/workshop and risk academic probation.
ADA STATEMENT
If a student has a physical or learning disability that may require
accommodation, he/she must register with the Office of Accessibility, located in
the Department of Health Services, prior to the end of the first week of classes
for each semester. These registered students must identify themselves to their
instructors and provide a copy of a letter from the Accessibility Office that
identifies appropriate accommodations no later than the first week of class.
GRADING POLICY
The grading scale is as follows: 70-73=C-, 74-76=C, 77-79=C+ etc.
